The SHOC C grade moved to 3rd on the ladder in div 7 with a convincing victory over Modbury at the middle school. With 9 changes from the previous weeks 37 point win against Angle Vale meant some of the more inexperienced members of the team were required to take a step. Skipper Cam Carroll demanded the boys come to play and we jumped out of the blocks to kick the first 4 goals in 10 minutes of play. Modbury rallied but could not put a score on the board and we finished the quarter with 3 late goals to lead 7.3 to 2 points a qtr time.
It was more of the same in the second qtr and the game was all but done by half time, SHOC 13.3 to 3.3. Inaccurate kicking in the 3rd quarter (3.8 to 3.3) prevented us taking a bigger lead into 3 quarter time and the last quarter was played for pride with both sides adding a further 5 goals each.
Quirkey was a revelation in the ruck, clearly dominating the centre bounces and his tackling and tenacity was fearless. Jo Elliott, Ed Whiting, Brett Clarke and Richo smashed Modbury at the clearances and their ability to run and carry the ball was a key to us winning. Our defence led by Spence, Adam Glenn, Ryan Brown and Stewie Watts strangled their forwards only allowing 3 first half goals. Waylen (Smithers) Ramsey looked very comfortable in his first C grade game and used the ball well. Cam Carroll's 10 goals was sublime, but the whole teams' willingness to commit themselves to winning the ball against much bigger, stronger opposition was to be commended. Central United (8th) at the middle school this week, followed by the undefeated Mawson Lakes at M.L to finish the round.
